A highway robbery took place on National Highway 12 near Raiganj on Tuesday evening, involving Aslema Khatun, a woman member of the Barua Gram Panchayat in Raiganj, and her husband, Ashar Mahammad. The couple, traveling in their car with family members to visit a relative’s house, were ambushed by a group of miscreants near Panishala Bazar. The attackers blocked their car and immediately began the assault.
The assailants reportedly attacked Ashar Mahammad first, beating him severely before forcibly taking his gold jewelry. The miscreants then turned their attention to Aslema Khatun, snatching her gold ornaments as well. In addition to robbing the couple, the assailants also stole a motorcycle belonging to one of their relatives who was accompanying them.
After the attack, the couple filed a written complaint at the Raiganj police station, detailing the assault and theft. The police have launched an investigation into the matter and are working to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the robbery. The authorities have not provided any updates on the status of the investigation at this time.
The head of Barua Gram Panchayat, Bhavananda Barman, has called for prompt action to ensure the perpetrators are captured. He has also urged law enforcement to prioritize the case and address concerns related to the security of citizens traveling on the highway.
